Life Lessons for My Daughter

#257 Nothing can ruin your life like drugs.

I want to be honest with you, because there is a lot of fear mongering clouding the choices you are going to face. I’ll admit it’s a fact that some people are able to use drugs without fundamentally destroying their lives; however, you must assume that you are not one of them. You can’t know how you will react to various drugs unless you try them, but the catch is that if you’re part of the majority who can’t control their usage, trying drugs will send you down a spiral from which it will be all but impossible to recover. Every drug user alters his or her life’s potential; drugs rob you of ambition and disconnect you from your identity. This is one of the very few lessons that I hope you do not have to learn through experience. The thought of your tiny perfection being usurped by chemical addiction is too much for me to bear.

#249 Stay conscious of your cholesterol.

Cholesterol is a white soapy substance found in the tissues of humans and other animals. HDL cholesterol is helpful to your body; it produces cell membranes and some of your hormones. LDL cholesterol can be unhealthy for you. If too much of it collects on the walls of your arteries, it will interfere with the flow of blood to your heart and brain, which could lead to a heart attack or stroke. To avoid this problem, choose whole grains and foods with less saturated fat and more fiber.

#198 Healthcare is not a right.

The way our constitution is structured you have an inalienable right to an attorney, a gun, a god, and due process. You do not have a right to be healthy, to a doctor, to medicine or to equal access to care that could save your life or the lives of your children. Let this weigh heavily on you as you choose a profession and where to expand your political leanings and charitable giving.

#191 Wear your seatbelt.

It’s one of those things you aren’t overly concerned with until you get older and your own mortality starts to gnaw at you, so for now do it because your mortality gnaws at me.

#189 Make tomatoes a staple of your diet.

They are both delicious and full of lycopene, which protects against heart disease and cancer. Serve them roasted as an appetizer for a dinner party and your guests will swoon, despite how simple they are to prepare.

Roasted Tomatoes
Cut several Roma Tomatoes in half lengthwise and place them in a shallow baking dish.
Douse with olive oil, a few tablespoons worth
Sprinkle with salt, pepper and dried thyme
Crush a few cloves of garlic over them
Roast at 400 for about an hour, until they are soft and the skins are slightly charred, they will be fragrant and juicy
Arrange on a platter and serve with sliced French bread and herbed goat cheese
Pesto also makes a nice accompaniment

#184 A calorie is a measurement of energy.

Just so you know the details: One calorie is the amount of heat energy required at a pressure of one atmosphere to raise the temperature of one gram of water one degree Celsius. What this means is that the more calories you eat, the more energy you have inside of you. When you don’t use that energy, say by playing sports or cooking a meal on your feet, it is stored in your body as fat. A lot of people don’t realize this; now you know that’s how it works.
